"Red Boots" – Apatelodes torrifacta on cherry
A young black cherry tree encroaches on a small meadow in Natick, Massachusetts. One leaf droops lower than the others, pulled down by an invisible weight. Turning the leaf over, it is not immediately clear what I am looking at. A mass of fungus? A wad of hair? Some strange deformation? The entity before me uncurls and walks slowly from the leaf; a large spotted Apatelodes takes shape at last.
