"Pupa" – Catocala innubens
A betrothed underwing caterpillar wiggles inside a loosely constructed cocoon of silk and leaf litter. Once an elongate and convincing twig mimic, the betrothed has now been reformed into an odd football-shaped creature. This ugly pre-pupal caterpillar will soon cast off its larval skin to reveal a bright green and amorphous pupa beneath. Within hours the pupa will pull together, harden, and darken. A beautiful sarcophagus. A three dimensional map of the adult moth to come.
