Henry's Marsh Caterpillar eating grass
Sprawling vines, matted alfalfa, mixed barnyard grasses, plants of all sorts grow in an abandoned roadside lot in Lincoln, Massachusetts. With a Dairy Joy ice cream in one hand, I reach down and pluck an unusual stem from the weedy mixture. A very spiny marsh caterpillar mirrors a dense spike of grass. The great wild waste places of city and suburb can produce creatures of surprising interest and beauty.
